Physical Education

Mission Statement

Physical Education at Jefferson Elementary is designed to do more than simply give students a chance to be active and get some exercise during school. The overall purpose and goal is to help students develop the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills needed to participate in a wide variety of physical activities outside of their school day and hopefully throughout their lives. We hope that by encouraging growth in all of these areas will give students the opportunity to say “Yes” when asked to participate in a game or activity because they will have already learned the basic skills needed to do so.

Physical activity is a very important part of a child’s development. There is a proven scientific connection between physical activity and brain development. We are wired to move and by practicing complex motor movements, we are also exercising our brains and preparing them to learn. This is true throughout our lives, so we strive to show students the importance and many benefits of developing a healthy, active lifestyle.
